In 1972, we created our first skincare product at Arizona Naturals. Within a few years, we expanded our manufacturing capabilities and shifted into private labeling for department stores, hotels, and more. As more companies started wanting unique formulations for skincare, haircare, bath products, and other personal care items, we rose to meet the demand, specializing in custom products with end-to-end manufacturing and value-add services.

We work closely with our customers to develop skincare formulations according to their vision to meet with their company values.

Formulation Basics

Skincare products are designed with a company’s desire to have a specific need met.  Skincare formulations may address how to improve wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dryness, elasticity, and more, while other products cleanse and remove makeup and exfoliate. Collectively, skincare sales make up about 30% of all cosmetic sales.

When designing a skincare formulation, there’s a lot to consider. You may need to decide between traditional vs. natural skincare, as well as what you want your product to do and how you want it to stand out. Carefully research your contract manufacturer to ensure they can create the product you’re envisioning.  It is important to ask about cost, key ingredients, testing and packaging.  Be sure you have a clear understanding of how long the entire process will take.

It is good to have an idea of the benefits of your key ingredients. However, it is not necessary to know the benefit of each ingredient or how it works.  The right contract manufacturer will have the in-depth knowledge of ingredients and chemistry to develop a formulation with ingredients that will synergistically work together to give you the desired results.

How to Develop a Formulation?

Formulating an effective, popular skincare product isn’t easy. It takes time, and there are several steps you don’t want to skip.  Knowing your company’s core values and marketing strategy, along with knowing your target market and key ingredients are vital to development of your formulation.  Providing a list of “must have” or key ingredients, a list of non-acceptable ingredients along with marketing claims, certifications and/or standards will help in developing a product that matches your final product expectations.

It is important to have an idea of what size and shape container you desire for your product.  This information can be critical to formulation development and is also essential, along with initial order quantities, in providing you accurate costs for your finished product.

Another important step is to test your products, ensure it is done correctly, and document the results.  This includes but is not limited to: stability testing, preservative effectiveness testing (PET) and compatibility testing.

What is the Difference between Traditional vs. Natural Formulations?

The word “natural” can be misleading, as it’s not a regulated term.  Every customer has a different definition of “natural”.  We will work with you to best understand your definition of natural and the options available for formulation development between natural and traditional.

The Manufacturing Process

Arizona Naturals offers contract manufacturing services. With contract manufacturing, you can supply the formula and we will create it for you.  You will retain all rights for marketing and selling this product.  If you do not have a formula, our Research & Development Lab will create a formula for you.  While you will market and sell this product under your brand, the contract manufacturer owns the formulation rights.
