Skin Care Vs. Make Up Sales

Are you thinking of entering the skin care or makeup product industry? Although both are very lucrative industries, sales from last quarter are showing more generosity toward skin care products with an increase of 6%. This means skin care sales outperformed make up sales last quarter.

As most cost-conscious consumers opt for skin care products, makeup sales have slowed down 4%. This is because the skin care industry has newer products and brands, including from smaller companies, which have been very appealing to consumers seeking unique and innovative products.

An industry analyst at The NPD Group has stated that makeup sales have been slowing down significantly since 2016. Contributing factors are the decrease of average prices for makeup and lip products are not selling as good as before.

What this means for someone looking to enter the cosmetics industry? Like people leaning towards healthier food restaurants rather than fast food, perhaps the skincare industry is more ideal to enter because people are no longer worried of covering up their skin and would prefer actually taking care of their skin.

If you are interested in the cosmetics industry and need more information and guidance, feel free to contact us. Our services range from manufacturing, research & development, quality control, regulatory and packaging specifically in the cosmetics industry.

Where Is The Candle Industry Going?

Candles have been around since 3000 B.C. In the last five years, the candle industry has been recovering from the recession. People just didn’t have the disposable income for them. But that is now changing and people are beginning to buy candles again, especially with new scents and colors being introduced. Not only that, but candles are also great product for home decor.

The types of candle products being produced today are votive candles, pillar candles, jar candles, container candles, taper candle and many other types of candles, which are usually the more creative type. If you are in the or are looking to enter the candle industry, the only obstacle in terms of competition are lower priced imported candles and substitutes that continue to grow in market share such as flowers. Nonetheless, the candle industry is expected to grow at an annual rate of 3.1 percent according to an IBIS World industry world report.

The IBIS World industry report on candles determined that the key factors for success in the candle industry are:

  • Increased savings in costs gained by increased level in candle production
  • Introduction of premium products
  • Having the ability to alter the production of candle products according to what the market wants.

There is about 10,000 different candle scents and about 2000 varieties available in the U.S., usually in gift shops, supermarkets, drug stores, discount stores, home decor stores and department stores. Don’t let that scare you away. What seems to be working great is the use of the Internet and social media to better advertise candle fragrances. Also about 35 percent of the revenue from candles are made during the holiday season, primarily November and December. The candle industry is not a bad one to enter if you can have a bit of innovation and determination. You’ll need a solid manufacturing partner and dealing with a contractor that has experience in the industry like Arizona Natural Resources will get you off to a great start. Top Three Trends In The Cosmetics Industry

Do you have interest in the cosmetics industry? Do you have a cosmetic product idea or are looking for a good idea based on the direction where the industry is heading? Here some of the top trends of the cosmetics industry that can perhaps help you in your future endeavors.

Eco-Friendliness and Sustainability

Like many other industries, the cosmetics has and is continuing to lean more towards eco-friendliness and sustainability. This means consumers are looking for cosmetics products that are made organically or from raw materials that don’t play a role in harming the environment. Companies invest a lot of money in research and innovation in products not made from harmful materials, that are sustainable and are not lacking in quality. Vegan products are very common now.

Part of sustainability is recycling, so consumer choices will come down to things such as the type of packaging the product has and whether it is recyclable or reusable. Then comes labeling, which is important in terms of transparency. Make sure all the information about how the product is made available.

Social Media in High Definition

Social media is becoming effective in helping consumers make purchase decisions. People with a good eye can see through the Photoshop effects a social media campaign uses in their pictures. It is important that if products are going to be promoted in action, then they should work as they are shown. This is where professionals such as make-up artists come along. Many have gathered strong social media followings on Instagram and Youtube, so it is important to form strong relationships with them.

Men

Cosmetics for just women is a thing of the past. The trend towards more men using cosmetics products has risen. Products for men such as balms and shaving creams are more popular than ever. Men’s grooming products are something to consider, as it is a growing market.

Private Label vs Contract Manufacturing Personal Care Products

Do you want to start your own personal care line of skin, hair or bath care products but you’re not sure whether private label or contract manufacturing is right for you?  Maybe you don’t know the difference between these two services?  There is a significant difference in the amount of time and resources it will take for each of these options.  Below are some of the features and benefits of each service.  See which service may be a better fit for you:

privatelabel

Private label manufacturing is a service that is better suited for companies with a smaller budget or need a quicker turnaround time.  With private labeling, you get to select products from a manufacturer’s existing formulations, put your own label and logo onto them and you’re ready to go!  This is the quickest and easiest way to get products to the market.  The advantage of this is that the product formulas should already have undergone stability and micro testing which can be costly and time consuming. The downside of this service is that you cannot make any changes to the formulas.  They must remain as originally formulated and tested otherwise they should be treated as a new formula, even if it’s just changing the fragrance, as any modifications can affect the stability of the formulations.

Some of the companies which may be best suited for private label manufacturing are, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, estheticians, salons, spas, retail stores and specialty stores.

anrcontractmanufactingContract manufacturing is a service that is better suited for companies that have the resources, time and expertise to have completely custom products made for them.  Although the manufacturing laboratory, you select, should have knowledgeable chemists on staff, it’s really up to each companies own vision and desires that will differ and allow them to create their own unique product line, focusing on their star performance ingredients and formulation desirables.  Each product will be custom manufactured to their specific needs and to get a custom formula created, that meets with certain specifications, can take time and effort to create.  Before any product is brought to market, a smaller pilot batch is recommended to be manufactured for use for PET (Preservative Effective Test) & 90-day stability testing to ensure the products are bacteria-free and have a 2 year shelf life.  After formulations have passed recommended testing the actual production run is manufactured, so you can see where this option is more time consuming and requires a larger investment.

Some of the companies that may be best suited for contract manufacturing are, any company with a unique idea, larger retail stores, existing nationally or internationally known brands, a company wanting completely custom formulations, a company that is already making their own products and is seeking to expand their line of products, and companies that may have done private label on the past and are now ready to start a new venture with the creation of their own custom brand line of products.

How to create custom personal care product lines

ANR-LogoWhether you’re looking to create a brand new product line of personal care products, or have an idea for one product, we can help make your personal care ideas become a reality.  We can custom manufacture your brand of hair, skin, bath and pet care products.  The process is really much easier than you think.  At least for you it is.  The hardest part of the entire process is that you need to come up with a viable idea, decide on the demographic to target, and decide the best way to bring the product to market.

The easiest way to begin this process is to contact us and discuss your vision.

This discovery phase allows us to review your strategy including target markets and products as well as branding with “star” ingredients incorporated across your entire product line. If there are similar products, currently in the marketplace, that you would like to use as a benchmark, provide us samples of those products with the list of ingredients. If you have an actual formula, with percentages of ingredients, we can produce your product. Providing a target cost in this phase will also help us create appropriate formulas based on your budget.

Our Research & Development Lab will then go to work on new formulas, replicating or modifying your existing formula according to your directive.  Any requested custom ingredients incorporated into your products can either be sourced by us or customer provided.  This includes custom fragrance.  Our lab will render samples of each product for you, and your colleagues, to try.  Based on your input and direction, if modifications are necessary, we can re-direct the formulas accordingly.

While your samples are being developed, you should be thinking about your packaging and making sure to select appropriate containers to properly dispense each product.  Our team can refer you to an appropriate packaging vendor where you will be able to research container options available to you as well as decide on the size of your containers.  You will also need to decide whether your containers will be printed or whether you prefer labels to be applied to each container.  We can review your artwork to ensure the proper labeling of your products .  Once you’ve selected the containers, decided on the case pack, and any other packaging requirements, you will need to decide whether you want to purchase these containers yourself, or have us purchase them on your behalf, providing you with a full turnkey service.

Once we have approved formulas and the packaging has been determined, we can provide you with a formal price quotation.  We have minimum batch size requirements and a proposal will be provided based on fill weights and the number of units the batch will yield of each product. All products are highly recommended to undergo PET (Preservative Effectiveness Testing) and 90 day stability testing.  This will help to ensure that your products have at least a 2 year shelf life, if stored under proper conditions.

Once a Purchase Order has been placed, and samples of actual components are received, a smaller pilot batch will be manufactured to generate product for recommended product testing, provide you with pre-market samples and validate production scalability. Once they have passed these tests and you approve we can proceed with an actual order production.

When we receive all of your components, packaging and raw materials in-house, we are now ready to fill your production order.  Our Quality Control Department will inspect the components when they arrive to ensure they are correct, clean and not damaged.  It generally takes 6 to 8 weeks to complete an order, depending on the order quantity and how many products you are ordering.  We will ship products to your designated address for storage and you are now ready to bring your products to market!

ANR Simple Beginnings

Simple Beginnings –
A Jar of Mud from the Sonoran Desert
Founded in 1972 by George F. Dembow, Jr., ANR was launched with a product that came bubbling out of the ground: Down To Earth Mineral Mud Mask…
This mud had been used for thousands of years by the Yavapai Indians in Arizona for its beautification and skin “tightening” properties – George thought it would be fabulous to share this small miracle! A short time later, other natural products, such as a Cactus Moisturizer and Shampoo, were introduced into the Down to Earth line.
In the mid-1970s, we expanded into manufacturing private label treatment cosmetics & toiletries for the department store trade. By the end of the decade, we were producing private label personal care products for 80% of department stores in the U.S. carrying private label programs.
During the 1980s, we purchased “Living Nail” Nail Hardener from Bendyne Ltd (sold in 2000), and started servicing the hotel amenities industry, manufacturing small bottles of personal care products given to hotel guests. We also broadened into personal care contract manufacturing and private label candles. We purchased Crystal Candles Corporation and began producing its signature products: Lord Byron’s™ Smoker’s Odor Eliminating Candle, Pet Odor Eliminating Candle, & Scentual Pleasures™ aromatherapy candles.

Today Since the mid-1990s, there’s been a shift in the personal care industry from a private label emphasis to the need for innovative, cutting-edge technologies. Most beauty marketers now desire custom, unique formulations in a world full of “Me Too” products. So we changed our focus and built up our R&D Laboratory to accommodate this direction.
Arizona Natural Resources, Inc. is proud to continue its family-owned tradition. We are the leading innovative developer & contract manufacturer of Skin & Hair Care products.

Currently, we manufacture for many prestigious companies throughout the United States, including Fortune 500 companies, mass marketers, department stores, health specialty stores, direct marketers, spas, resorts, and others.
For over 40 years, it has been our primary goal to be at the forefront of our field by following these simple principles: Quality, Service, Value, Honesty, & Innovation.
