Label Specifications

Thank you for choosing us to manufacture your products.  To assist you in successfully designing the label art that you will be providing to us, here are Arizona Natural Resources’ label specifications.

Rolls

  • All labels must be pressure sensitive, on a roll
  • All label rolls must be marked with:
    • The quantity of the roll
    • Arizona Natural Resources’ item number on the outside of the roll as well as the inner core of the roll
  • Rolls must be wound taut
  • Do NOT perforate backing
  • Inner Diameter core must be 3”
  • Outer Diameter core must be a minimum of 11 ½” and a maximum 12”
  • Minimum of 1,500 labels per roll
  • Maximum weight of the roll CANNOT exceed 10 lbs.

Labels/Backing

  • All labels must have radius (rounded) corners
  • A minimum gap MUST be present on packaging as follows:
    • A 1/8”gap between the bottom of the label and bottom of packaging
    • A 1/8”gap between the top of the label and shoulder of packaging
    • A 3/16” gap between the edge of the label and the edge of the lid or bottom of packaging for circular labels placed on lids or bottoms of packaging
    • A 3/16” gap between the edge of the label and start of recessed area or raised edge if a recessed area or raised edge exists on lid or bottom of packaging
  • It is preferable for labels to be laminated to avoid scuffing & scratching
  • If you are using a web width of 1” or smaller, labels must be film – NOT PAPER
  • For packaging with a single label:
    • Label must be in copy position 3 (right hand unwind)
  • For packaging with front and back labels:
    • Labels must appear on two DIFFERENT rolls, and
      • Front labels must be in copy position 3 (right hand unwind)
      • Back labels must be in copy position 4 (left hand unwind)
    • Labels must have at least 1/8” between each other on the roll – no butt cut*
    • NO full wrap labels without prior approval, label must have a gap of at least 1/8” when applied to packaging*

*NOTE:  Full wrap labels can be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Viability will depend on symmetry/geometry of packaging as well as overall quality of the containers and labels.  Production samples of packaging and labels will be required to verify and approve.

Label Design

  • For best results, please advise us of the size of your label and the size/type of container you wish to use PRIOR to completing the design to ensure compatibility
    • This is especially a concern for jarred products
  • For jarred items it is preferable to design a 3-panel type label with the prominent display panel in the center and all copy on the left and right sides
  • Tapered containers cause problems when the label is too wide or too long
    • If your packaging is tapered, consult with us to determine appropriate label size
  • If your product is a shower or bath product we strongly recommend that you use a film label, NOT paper
  • You must obtain PRIOR approval for packaging with front and back labels.
    • Ability to apply front and back labels is limited by the capability of the machines
    • packaging must be provided to us with proposed label size PRIOR to beginning your art work

General

  • We recommend NOT using paper liners. PK liners or film liners provide optimum results and less downtime on the production floor.
  • Your label supplier is responsible for testing labels on actual packaging to determine an appropriate adhesive for your application
  • Labels MUST have compatibility between materials, ink & lamination
    • Our incoming QC procedures involve a “rub test” where packaging is labeled and rubbed together to simulate a shipping situation. The labels cannot scratch or the finish rub off during this test or labels will be rejected

NOTE:  It is STRONGLY recommended that you send us die strikes/blanks of labels on actual stock, adhesive, liner and lamination to test PRIOR to printing all labels.

Artwork Design

  • Leave 1/16” margin between any text or graphic element and all edges of label
  • Do not use light or thin type
  • Do not use smaller than 5 point for regular type and 8 point for reverse type
  • Ensure your label(s) meet regulations in force by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Federal Drug Administration (FDA)
    • See Mandatory FTC & FDA Packaging Regulations for some guidelines

Artwork Design (continued)

NOTE:  Email, preferred, or fax separated proofs to us for troubleshooting prior to sending your final artwork to help save time and prevent redesign.  If emailing, please do so with PDF file.

  • If Arizona Natural Resources is ordering your labels, when sending your art files:
    • All art files preferred in Mac format
    • Adobe Illustrator is preferred
      • Will accept Photoshop, In-Design & Quark
      • CANNOT accept art created in Adobe Pagemaker or Microsoft Publisher
    • Include all screen/printer fonts, or convert type to outline
    • Submit art on CD, DVD, jump drive or via email (compressed or online storage)
    • Provide color proofs with final art, if via email please include PDF of final art

We will provide you with a printed proof for your approval BEFORE proceeding to press.  We will not print labels without your final approval.

If you cannot create art using the above guidelines, please advise us so that we can work with you to come up with a potential alternative.

Failure to comply with the specifications may result in the rejection of your labels and/or an increased cost to you for additional labor resulting from nonconforming labels.

Mandatory FTC & FDA Packaging Regulations

The FTC & FDA have packaging rules and regulations governing what MUST (and in some cases, what must not) appear on Cosmetic packaging for all products intended for sale in the United States.  The Personal Care Products Council (PCPC and formerly the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association), the leading national trade association for the cosmetic and personal care products industry provides information and guidance with government regulations.  We recommend you refer to the following:
